Live coverage: White House briefing on trade and Ukraine discussions

The White House press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, offered a brief explanation to reporters on Friday afternoon, a day after President Trump revealed his first significant trade deal following last month’s extensive fee announcement.

On Thursday, Trump declared an agreement between the US and the UK, as both global and domestic markets are navigating the administration’s tariff decisions. He stated that “many” more transactions are in progress.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent expressed hopes to meet with Swiss and Chinese officials over the weekend. They are currently facing 145% tariffs on goods imported into the US, while the White House indicates a potential reduction in Beijing’s import tax.

This briefing comes as the Trump administration continues to endorse ceasefire discussions between Russia and Ukraine, with the president planning a trip to the Middle East next week.

The event is set to begin at 1 PM EDT.
