Live updates: Hurricane Milton makes landfall near Sarasota, as Florida sees flooding and tornadoes

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key Wednesday night as the National Weather Service issued a storm warning for the Tampa area.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) said at an earlier press conference that Milton was “in the process of making landfall” as a Category 3 storm.

Milton's landfall was preceded by flooding and multiple tornadoes in the state.

DeSantis urged residents to ride out the storm and stay put, saying it was too dangerous to evacuate. More than 500,000 homes and businesses are without power in Florida.

Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Helen similarly quickly expanded in the Gulf of Mexico and struck the southeastern United States.

Federal agencies have also warned of increased risks of fraud and price gouging.
