Lloyd Austin Back in Hospital for an ‘Emergent Bladder Issue’

The Pentagon announced Sunday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been released from the hospital for the first time in several weeks after a lengthy hospitalization due to treatment for prostate cancer and subsequent complications.

Around 5 p.m. ET, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told Pentagon reporters in a statement:

Today, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was taken by security personnel to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be tested for symptoms that would suggest an urgent bladder problem. . He has notified the Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Additionally, the White House and Congress were notified.

The statement said Mr. Austin would continue to work “at this time” and suggested he may be hospitalized for a period of time.

“At this time, the Secretary maintains the functions and duties of his office. The Deputy Secretary stands ready to assume the duties and duties of the Secretary of Defense, as appropriate. Secretary Austin maintains the functions and duties of the Secretary of Defense as necessary to perform his duties. He went to the hospital with a secret communications system,” Ryder added.

“We will provide an update on Secretary Austin’s condition as soon as possible.”

This notification, which came just hours after Austin’s hospitalization, is in stark contrast to the previous two times he was hospitalized. First, in late December, Austin underwent surgery for prostate cancer, but he didn’t tell the president.

In the second lawsuit, Austin was rushed to the intensive care unit on January 1st, but it was not until January 4th that President Joe Biden, his vice president, and other White House and Pentagon officials told him that he had been rushed to the intensive care unit. I didn’t tell you that. He waited another day before reporting to Congress and the American people. public.

The lack of transparency has infuriated both Republicans and Democrats, who have called for Austin’s resignation over his unauthorized and secret absences at a time when U.S. troops are being targeted in the Middle East.

Mr. Austin is scheduled to testify before Congress on February 29 at the request of House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.).
