Loeffler: Willis affair ‘shatters any notion’ of fair Trump trial in Georgia

Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) has called on the judge overseeing former President Trump’s Georgia criminal case to fire Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D).

In Monday’s editorial Loeffler argued in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the relationship between Willis and special counsel Nathan Wade made it impossible for her to fairly prosecute Trump.

“Ms. Willis’ conflict of interest shatters any notion that the case against Mr. Trump was fairly prosecuted. Her plan is disqualified,” Loeffler wrote.

Loeffler noted that Georgia Judge Scott McAfee suggested last week that the relationship “could lead to” disqualification from the case, calling it “a step in the right direction.” .

“But anything short of dismissing the case outright is like putting a bandage on an open wound in a justice system that is bleeding core principles of due process,” she said.

“Too many prosecutors today are like Mr. Willis and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg: zealous partisans who trade impartial justice for political calculation.”

Mr. Bragg sued Mr. Trump in a separate hush money case centered on a redemption the president made in 2016 to his then-fixer Michael Cohen. Michael Cohen paid Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress who allegedly had an affair with the former president, to keep quiet.

Mr. Willis testified for nearly two hours last week, during which he confronted lawyers who argued that Mr. Willis’ recent relationship with Mr. Wade meant the indictment against Mr. Trump and several of his allies was “fatally flawed.” defended its reputation and relationships.

The Fulton County District Attorney is accused of employing his girlfriend, who then benefited financially from his employment. She denied the allegations, which were first made public by defendant Michael Roman, a 2020 Trump campaign operative, and called her disbarment motion to remove her from her case “disingenuous.” Ta.

Willis and Wade reiterated in court last week that their relationship began in early 2022 and ended in summer 2023. Prosecutors said the two met at a judicial conference in 2019, where they interacted as legal scholars of color and became something of a mentor. Romantic – the relationship at the time.

Loeffler, who was appointed to fill one of the Georgia Senate seats vacated by former Sen. Johnny Isakson in 2020, said the criminal racketeering charges against Trump and his allies were politically motivated. He reiterated the common assertion that this is the case.

“It’s no coincidence that Willis launched her.” re-election campaign Just five days before she filed a formal grand jury indictment against Trump last year, or initially demanded the start of his trial “Just one week before Georgia’s 2024 presidential primary,” she wrote.

Loeffler, who testified before the Fulton grand jury in 2022, was herself a “target” of the grand jury investigation and faced intense scrutiny for supporting President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. claimed to have done so.

The former senator was among 39 people recommended for indictment by a special grand jury, but Willis ultimately decided not to indict her.

Loeffler argued that dismissing Willis from the case is not enough to “fix our justice system,” and urged residents to remove him from the vote in November.

“Mr. Willis will be on the November ballot. This represents a rare opportunity to restore balance to an administration that has supported left-wing pro-crime causes for far too long,” she wrote. . “As Americans, we must recognize and end our left-wing legal system by removing partisanship from a system that demands fairness and a duty to abide by the law.”
