Recently, things haven’t been looking great for Democrats. They’ve had a rather chaotic week, from Ilhan Omar fumbling basic questions about a recent Democratic trip to El Salvador to Kamala Harris delivering her first major speech since losing to Donald Trump. It was definitely a week where a drink or two might have felt necessary.
Internal Struggles
Starting a conflict is often seen as easy, but resolving it? That’s another story. David Hogg, the current vice-chairman of the Democratic National Committee, seems poised to ignite some division within his own party. He’s promising a major campaign against older Democratic incumbents, though it’s unclear how he’ll take the lead.
On Tuesday, news outlet Semafor reported that Kalyn Free, a Native American attorney who narrowly lost the vice-chair election to Hogg, is contesting the election results. The DNC has scheduled a meeting for May 12 to review her challenge. Notably, Free asserts that the election “discriminated against three candidates of color.” Not exactly reassuring language if you’re a straight white male.
Meanwhile, Hogg is determined to stay true to his quirky persona and keeps insisting he’s ready to “fight.”
Not So Classy Moments
Ilhan Omar has always had a knack for bluntness, and let’s just say her political judgment hasn’t shined recently. During an interview with reporter Myles Morrell, she was asked a straightforward question about whether more Democrats should travel to El Salvador to defend a deported MS-13 member. Instead of a simple response, Omar opted to tell Morrell to “f**k off,” all while cracking up her staff.
While such moments can be a bit entertaining, they certainly don’t contribute to a polished image for the party. What a way to handle it, huh?
Kamala’s Big Speech
Then there was Kamala Harris’s speech, which marked her return to the public eye following a not-so-great election outcome. Honestly, her challenge was simply to avoid saying anything too outrageous—a tough ask, perhaps, but achievable.
Yet, she chose to liken Democrats to elephants during an earthquake, citing a viral video of zoo elephants huddling together in response to the tremors. Her message was about solidarity and protection, but the imagery was, well, interesting.
Mixed Feelings on Borders
On a related note, Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett unexpectedly voiced her support for secure borders. In a video she posted, she criticized the deportation agenda of the Trump administration while, unintentionally, echoing a call for stricter border control. “What if other countries just started sending random people to our country? That’s absolutely insane,” Crockett said. Sounds like she’s come around to a more conventional view on borders, which could be a surprising shift.
Waltz Speaks Out
In Minnesota, Governor Tim Waltz confirmed his connection with a recent hire and hinted that choosing someone strictly based on race or ethnicity might lead to issues. At a Harvard Kennedy School forum, he commented that he was selected to appeal to white voters, which might not have played out as planned in the current political climate.
Trump’s Uncertain Prospects
As for President Trump, his approval ratings may not be stellar, but Democrats shouldn’t celebrate just yet. A recent CNN poll found that 45% of registered voters think Trump is performing better than Kamala Harris, who only garnered 43% in the same comparison.
These figures should act as a wake-up call for Democrats. It’s clear that just because Trump isn’t wildly popular, that doesn’t equate to easy victories for his opponents. If they believe they can simply coast ahead, they might want to reconsider.
