London Marathon to Allow Transgender Runners to Compete as Women

The organizers of the London Marathon have declared that biologically male transgender individuals can compete with women in future races despite a recent ruling from the Supreme Court that upheld the reality of biological sex.

London Marathon Race Director Hugh Brasher said Wednesday that competitors can compete with the sex people they identify with in major mass participation races.

However, the organization noted that transgender runners are not eligible for elite, championship or “age-appropriate” categories, as prohibited by the World Athletics Guidelines, BBC guidelines. It has been reported.

Last week, a Supreme Court decision found that gender is defined by biology under the Equality Act. This probably means that transgender individuals will be prohibited from launching lawsuits claiming inequality if they are prohibited from unitary spaces that include areas such as women-only toilets, changing rooms, and sports.

Rather than implementing the ruling immediately, organizers of the London Marathon said they will wait until they receive a report on the ruling from the Equality and Human Rights Commission and Sports England before changing policies.

However, other sports organizations have already restricted access to events prior to Supreme Court ruling, including British cycling, British rowgi, Rugby Football Union (RFU), and British athletics.

The London Marathon previously sparked controversy over its transgender policy. In 2023, Glennick Frank was the first Glennick Frank, who competed in the New York Marathon the previous year.GlenIn the men’s category, he beat around 14,000 women at the London Marathon and ranked 6,160th out of 20,123 women after taking part in the race as a woman.

If Frank had competed in the male category, he would rank 15,386th. After the race, Frank proudly declared in an interview with the BBC that the performance was a demonstration of “girl power.”

Malaya Mauchi, a former British Olympian and one of the fastest women in history, criticized Frank for competing with women as a biological man, saying, “Nearly 14,000 women finished in worse finish positions, as men in the female category are unfair to women.”

Frank later apologized for taking part in the women’s race and then continued to advocate for another transgender race in marathon running.
