Long Island girls basketball rivals battle for Nassau County title

They don't want that otherwise.

The two Nassau Girls basketball rivals will reveal it at the True David vs. Goliath County Championship at Farmingdale State at noon Saturday.

This is the first title appearance of the fourth plainview Bethpage Hawks, facing second seed, nearby rival and defending champion Syosset Braves.

“It's the perfect game to say you win,” Hawks star guard and forward Emma Heaney told the post of upcoming contests.

“This is a respectable team, we are a respectable team, and we are just a great championship,” added the senior tied to Lafayette, who will take the courtroom for the leopards next winter.

Hawks' 12th grade head coach Nick Thomasro knows this opportunity has been coming for a long time.

“This program was winning a couple of games a year when I took over it,” he said.

“Slowly, but certainly over the past four years, making the semi-finals has become a bit of a standard. But together with Emma and her seniors, they have raised that standard and now they can do something really special.”

The coach added that he lost a 61-49 loss to Syosset in January.

“It was after that loss that we swore to each other.” There should be no other losses. He spoke about the team who won the final seven games and finished with a 17-5 record.

“We're here now. It's exciting.”

Settlement of scores in a 19-3 set is no easy task as Braves manager Michael Ferreira intentionally schedules several high-competitive urban schools during the season to increase the grit of players.

“This team really wants to win,” he said. “But we don't talk a lot about back-to-back… This group really wants to create their own history.”

A little south of the plain view, they focus on playing their own game rather than a considerable task at hand.

“We're all chasing that feeling [of victory] And do some fun and play,” Heaney said. “It really helped us get ready for Saturday.”
