Longtime Democrat leader Rep. Steny Hoyer suffers ‘mild’ stroke

Rep. Stinny Hoyer of Maryland, a longtime Democratic leader, suffered a “mild” stroke over the weekend but is now recovering.

A statement from Deputy Chief of Staff Margaret Mulkerin said Hoyer, 85, “suffered a mild ischemic stroke and was receiving medical treatment” on Sunday night.

Hoyer has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than 40 years.

As New York Post Marcheline’s statement did not say which hospital Hoyer was taken to or how long he remained there, but added that Hoyer is “responding well to treatment,” has “no lingering symptoms,” and is “expected to return to his normal schedule next week.”

Mulkerin’s statement also expressed gratitude to Hoyer and his family to his entire “medical team.”

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that the vast majority of strokes (a whopping 87 percent) are ischemic, meaning they involve a blockage that prevents the brain from receiving normal blood flow. WBAL Television Reported.

Hoyer has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than four decades, and after serving several years as a Maryland state senator, he was elected in a special election to represent the state’s 5th congressional district in 1981.

Since then, Hoyer has risen through the ranks within his party, ultimately becoming House Majority Leader, a position he will hold from January 2019 until January 2023.
