Former Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff has resigned from his current position as the Broncos' assistant head coach, citing health issues.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday night that Westhoff, 76, made the decision to resign after several discussions with Broncos head coach Sean Payton and after consulting with his doctor.
Westhoff began experiencing “vision-related issues” last week and underwent tests, including an MRI, on Monday. According to Pelissero.
Westhoff's eye symptoms appeared on the flight home from the Broncos' 16-14 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. 9 Colorado News reported.
The football coach plans to return to his home in Florida.
“It's not easy to make this decision, but this was a wake-up call that I have to put my health first,” Westhoff told Pelissero. “This team is heading in the very right direction with a strong foundation and a winning culture. We thank Sean for the opportunity to contribute to a first-class organization and wish the Broncos the best of luck.”
Westhoff was hired by Payton in February 2023 and is in his second season as an assistant with the Broncos.
New York football fans will remember Westhoff's long tenure with Gang Green from 2001 to 2012.
Prior to his time with the Jets, Westhoff served as the Dolphins' special teams/tight ends coach from 1986 to 2000 before spending two seasons with Payton in New Orleans in 2017 and 2018.

Westhoff has retired twice, once after the 2012 season and again after the 2018 season, missing five seasons before reteaming with Payton in Denver.
The Broncos are 5-5 on the season and will play the Falcons at home in Week 11.
