Searching for a job in the current labor market can be a daunting prospect, especially when other candidates are applying for the same job opening.
Resume.io says LinkedIn job listings in all 50 states have seen an increase in applicants this year, making them more competitive. New research.
The study identified which states job seekers have the most competition for applying to, and offered other findings such as the global job market. The resume-focused platform analyzed about 40,000 LinkedIn job listings in the U.S. for its U.S. rankings, but more than 104,000 in total.
According to the study, a job opening in the evergreen state receives an average of 41 applicants within seven days, making Washington number one out of 50 states for “the most competitive U.S. job market.”

Increased competition in Seattle helped Washington state take the top spot, according to Resume.io, which said Seattle received an average of 40.9 resumes in the first week for jobs, a 445.4% increase from 2023 and putting it first in the world.

Coming in second was Colorado, which according to the study, saw an average of 28.11 applications per job ad on LinkedIn in the first week it was posted.

Massachusetts, rated the third most competitive state by Resume.io, wasn't far behind at 27.81.

Two other Northeastern states, New York and neighboring New Jersey, also ranked in the top five for job competition. In the Empire State, an average of 25.49 people applied for each job in the first week, compared with 25.37 in New Jersey.

Competitive growth rates among the top five states also vary widely, with Washington state seeing a 419% increase from 2023 and Colorado seeing a 70.4% increase, for example.

Meanwhile, the five states with the least competitive job markets were Wyoming, Alaska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana, where job ads tended to attract an average of 3.64 to 4.5 applicants in the first week, according to Resume.io's research.

Separate Workday data suggests job seekers face the most competition from other candidates in jobs in communications, media, technology, financial services and certain other industries.
The national unemployment rate remained at 4.2% in August, according to the federal government. The labor force participation rate was 62.7%.
