Lorde and 5 other celebrities who stopped using birth control

Ayahuasca Trends and Female Empowerment

It seems like the latest trend among the chic and trendy doesn’t require any lush retreats or lengthy shamanic journeys.

There’s a growing conversation around embracing the natural cycle of fertility; it’s shifting away from the usual pharmaceutical narratives that often dominate the scene.

The pop star Lorde recently shared her perspective with Rolling Stone, revealing that she plans to stop taking the pill in 2023 after being on it since she was a teenager. “I hadn’t ovulated for ten years,” she said. “When it finally happened, I can’t even describe how incredible it felt. It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had.”

This so-called ‘uncut ovulation’—the natural process where ovaries release eggs—has been noted to bring about benefits like heightened mental clarity, increased desirability, and, to sum it up, a general sense of happiness.

However, the New Zealand singer has also acknowledged the residual shame she feels about her past decisions, which ties back to societal pressures and expectations. “I’m starting to feel my choices may not align perfectly with mainstream thought,” she reflects.

This kind of apprehension isn’t unusual, especially among those raised in strict liberal environments. In communities that promote sexual freedom, women opting out of hormonal contraceptives often find themselves viewed as challenging the status quo of “reproductive rights.”

Annie Murphy

Celebrities like the “Schitt’s Creek” actress Annie Murphy have also spoken out about stepping away from hormonal birth control. She mentioned that early on, the pill led to considerable mood swings. There were moments when she felt entirely disconnected from herself.

Haley Baldwin Bieber

Another well-known figure, Haley Baldwin Bieber, stopped taking birth control after experiencing a mini-stroke, which she attributed to its side effects. She raised awareness, stating the dangers that can accompany hormonal contraceptives, particularly for migraine sufferers.

Natalie Portman

In a poignant speech during her Harvard graduation in 2015, Natalie Portman reflected on her own challenges related to birth control—highlighting how it once contributed to severe depression for her during her college years.

Khloe Kardashian

Then there’s Khloe Kardashian, who decided to stop taking the pill after a doctor told her that her fertility markers weren’t optimal for her age. She sought a more natural approach.

Nicole Bendayan

Lastly, health influencer Nicole Bendayan shared her negative experiences with hormonal birth control, which began at age 16. Despite her concerns, medical professionals largely dismissed her distressing side effects until she finally chose to discontinue it. “I faced frequent infections and debilitating anxiety,” she explained, describing her discomfort and struggles.
