Life After Infamy
Lorena Bobbitt, perhaps best known for the shocking incident three decades ago where she severed her husband’s penis, is now living a quiet life in the suburbs alongside her long-time partner.
The infamous event unfolded on June 23, 1993, when Bobbitt, armed with an 8-inch kitchen knife, attacked her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, while he was asleep. After the act, she drove away from their Manassas, Virginia home, holding onto what she had just severed.
The young man later panicked, disposing of the severed part in a field near a 7-Eleven before contacting the authorities.
Now 56, Bobbitt, whose real name is Lorena Gallo, resides in a rental home valued at $640,000 in Prince William County, situated an hour south of Washington, D.C.
She lives there with her partner, Dave Bellinger, 56, their daughter Olivia, 21, and their pet dog, creating a seemingly ordinary suburban family life.
Photos capture the couple in casual attire, walking their dog and attending church, projecting an image of an average neighborhood couple.
Interestingly, Bellinger has a criminal background, featuring 26 offenses ranging from credit card theft to various traffic violations.
The two met in the late 1990s while attending community college, some years after Gallo was acquitted of charges related to a violent incident due to temporary insanity.
Locals note that the couple feels somewhat out of place in their community. Some neighbors joke darkly about Bellinger being apprehensive about marrying Gallo.
One neighbor, Amelia Stern, commented, “It’s amusing to think about who lives on my block. The guys here get a kick out of it. I suppose she’s nice enough, but I’m not worried about her charming her husband. Seems like he’s got his own concerns.”
Another neighbor expressed hesitation in approaching Gallo. “I don’t hold anything against her, but I can’t shake the image of her driving around with—that thing—in her hand,” he admitted.
At the time of the incident, Gallo argued that her actions stemmed from a buildup of years of abuse, including physical and sexual trauma.
John Bobbitt faced charges of marital sexual assault but was acquitted later that year.
In a remarkable turn of events, police recovered his severed penis, which, after being packed in ice, was successfully reattached after a lengthy surgery. Bobbitt described the ordeal as a nightmarish experience, stating, “I thought I was going to die.”
Surprisingly, months later, things returned to normal for him, and he even went on to feature in adult films during the 1990s.
John Bobbitt has consistently denied ever assaulting Gallo. Meanwhile, she has dedicated her recent years to supporting domestic violence victims and founded the Lorena Gallo Foundation in 2018.
