Lorenzo Musetti’s Controversial Remarks During Beijing Match
Italian tennis player Lorenzo Musetti is facing backlash after making some comments towards Chinese fans during a recent match in Beijing.
The 23-year-old, competing against French player Giovanni Mpetosi at the China Open, became visibly frustrated when he heard someone coughing in the audience. This occurred while he was in a tense moment during a second-set tiebreaker.
In a moment of anger, Musetti exclaimed, “They’re coughing all the time, these f—k Chinese people. They cough every three seconds.” Although he won the match, his remarks overshadowed the victory, drawing harsh criticism on social media and accusations of racism.
By Saturday morning, Musetti took to Instagram to apologize, expressing regret for his words. “I sincerely apologize for what I said in frustration yesterday during the match,” he wrote. He clarified that his comments were directed at a few individuals in the crowd whose coughing was disruptive, not meant to generalize about the Chinese people.
This incident marks the second time this month that Musetti had to navigate controversy related to his comments about China. Earlier, American tennis player Taylor Townsend made headlines after her remarks about the food served at a buffet during the Billy Jiang Cup. She described her experience as “surprising” and rated her meal “two solid two out of ten,” also expressing regret for her comments.
Both athletes highlight a growing sensitivity in sports, especially in international competition, where words can impact public perception significantly. It’s a reminder of how quickly tensions can escalate and the importance of being mindful in moments of stress.
