Changes Ahead for Saturday Night Live Season 51
Exciting updates are on the way for Saturday Night Live. Showrunner Lorne Michaels hinted at significant cast changes for the upcoming 51st season, set to premiere on October 4th.
In a recent interview with Pack News, the 80-year-old Michaels confirmed he intends to mix things up this season. When asked whether he planned to “sway” with the cast, he responded affirmatively, indicating that an announcement is expected soon.
So far, it’s official that James Austin Johnson will reprieve his role as former President Donald Trump.
The prior season, which ran from September 28, 2024, to May 17, 2025, featured a mix of familiar faces, including Johnson, Michael Che, Colin Jost, and others. It seems Ashley Padilla, Emile Wakim, and Jane Wickline emerged as fan favorites.
In an emotional farewell, writer Celeste Im shared on social media that he would be leaving after five seasons. He expressed how the opportunity to work on SNL was a dream come true and reflected on the memorable moments of his journey.
Im went on to highlight his pride in being the first trans writer on the show, acknowledging the unique position he holds in the show’s history, while also thanking friends and family for their support.
After Im’s announcement, fellow cast member Bowen Yang responded with encouragement, expressing his admiration and support for Im.
Michaels noted that no major changes were made to the cast last season, as he wanted to bring several beloved past cast members back for the 50th season. He mentioned that a collaborative approach was taken in decision-making, indicating that many voices were involved in the process.
Kenan Thompson, who holds the record as the longest-serving cast member at 22 seasons, hinted at the potential for more changes in Season 51. With a bittersweet reflection, he remarked that it seems likely this next season will look different.
As the production gears up for another season, Michaels reassured fans that he isn’t going anywhere just yet, hinting at his continued involvement with SNL.
Fans can look forward to a fresh take when Season 51 launches on NBC on October 4th.
