Explosion Reported on Kharg Island Amid Rising Tensions
On Tuesday morning, multiple news outlets indicated that local residents detected an explosion on Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf. This island is crucial for Iran’s oil exports, with a substantial portion going to China.
A report from Axios, referencing unnamed sources, suggested that U.S. forces may have attacked Kharg Island. However, there’s currently no concrete evidence to support this claim. If accurate, this wouldn’t be the first incident; a prior attack in March targeted military installations but spared the oil infrastructure. As of now, details regarding what was impacted during Tuesday’s explosion remain unclear.
This explosion news follows intense statements from President Donald Trump, who set an ultimatum for Iran to agree to a cease-fire by 8 PM EDT. If not, he warned of potential total destruction of the Iranian “civilization.” The leadership in Iran has been somewhat nebulous since the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in February, and while Mojtaba Khamenei has been declared the new leader, there hasn’t been a clear public presence from him. Additionally, Iranian officials have not shown any signs of willingness to negotiate with the U.S.
The National newspaper noted reports of explosions heard across Iran, particularly mentioning Kharg Island, but didn’t specify further details about the incidents. Similar information emerged from other outlets citing the Mehr News Agency and government-related sites.
Several videos claiming to showcase smoke rising from Kharg Island were circulated on social media, but the authenticity of these clips could not be confirmed by Breitbart News.
Axios also cited a report suggesting that an anonymous U.S. official might have acknowledged responsibility for the explosion. Earlier, it was suggested that the U.S. was considering a blockade or even an occupation of Kharg Island to obstruct Iranian oil exports.
Kharg Island plays a pivotal role in Iran’s economy, as most of its oil is exported through tankers docked at this specific location. Approximately 90% of Iranian oil exports, primarily sent to China, are managed here.
The U.S. military has a history of targeting the island, with a significant attack in March that didn’t affect civilian oil infrastructure. After that operation, Trump appeared to declare a focus away from oil facilities but didn’t entirely rule out future strikes.
Interestingly, discussions around Kharg Island’s strategic importance have been ongoing since as far back as 1988, when Trump suggested it could be exploited in a future conflict with Iran, proposing a significant operation there if the U.S. were attacked.
Operation Epic Fury was launched on February 28, aimed at diminishing Iran’s threat to its neighbors and undermining its government, which has supported various terrorist groups globally. Reports indicated that this operation has already seen the removal of numerous key Iranian figures.
On Easter Sunday, Trump expressed his desire to destroy Iran, and on Tuesday, he declared it would be a critical day of reckoning. His statements on social media emphasized the need for Iran to comply or face dire consequences.
In recent remarks, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the Iranian leaders, contrasting earlier comments about making progress in negotiations. He highlighted a deep-seated frustration over what he believes has been a long cycle of dishonesty and failure on Iran’s part.
Trump later proclaimed that “an entire civilization will perish tonight, never to rise again,” showing a mix of regret and inevitability about the outcomes at hand.
