Wheeler admitted to the alleged transactions in an interview and was fired, Webre said. The man had been with the sheriff’s office for less than a year, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives said Wheeler was investigated on at least one occasion after he was suspected of bringing unspecified contraband into the prison.
