Tragic Hunting Accident in Louisiana
A hunting trip in Louisiana became a heartbreaking event last month when a man described as having a “heart of gold” was accidentally shot and killed.
Garrett Berdan, 45, lost his life when his rifle went off while he was walking with a hunting partner in Lafourche Parish around 4 p.m. on November 29, as noted by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
According to his partner, as they crossed through cattle, Berdan handed over his rifle, which then accidentally discharged. Tragically, Berdan was struck by a .308 caliber bullet and succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive.
His remains were taken to the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is aiding the sheriff’s office with the ongoing investigation.
Berdan is survived by his 19-year-old daughter, Chloe, his son Ethan, and his fiancée, Tiffany Hunter. Chloe, reflecting on her father’s memory in a Facebook post, expressed, “I wish I hadn’t posted this, but I’m so happy to have shared 19 years with you. I love you forever, Dad, and always will.” She went on to call him her role model and favorite person, promising to always carry his memory as her “love bug.”
Online tributes described him as someone who was always willing to help others and who formed deep, loving relationships. His obituary noted that while his life was far too short, it was filled with love and meaningful connections.
Additionally, it emphasized his passion for the outdoors and building things, alongside his love for family. “Garrett was a die-hard outdoorsman,” it stated, highlighting that he prioritized his family’s happiness above all.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, those wanting to honor Berdan contribute to the Wounded Warrior Project in his name.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries also reminded fellow hunters to prioritize safety by removing firearms and wearing appropriate safety gear during travel to and from hunting sites.
