Louisiana Man Charged With Arson That Killed His Three Kids

A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of setting a New Orleans home on fire, killing three children, WDSU reports.

Joseph Washington Sr., 29, is charged with one count of aggravated arson, three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of second-degree abuse of a juvenile. according to To WDSU.

Two of the victims, Washington’s 5-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son, were rescued from the fire but later died at a hospital. The body of his 3-year-old son was found in the wreckage of the home, WDSU reported. Washington was arrested the day after Tuesday night’s incident.

Washington reportedly jumped from the overpass and was later taken to a hospital for medical evaluation of his injuries. NBC news.

Authorities were alerted to the danger by the children’s mother, who was at work at the time. She called 911 and reported that someone on her phone was threatening to burn down her residence. A devastating fire quickly broke out after the emergency call, NBC News reported.

According to WDSU, the children’s mother filed a restraining order against Washington in 2018, alleging physical abuse including hitting and choking, some of which occurred while Washington held the children. Washington was twice convicted of domestic violence and assault in 2016, and was arrested again on similar charges in 2018. Additionally, Washington has reportedly previously threatened the lives of his then-wife and child, the paper noted, citing court documents.
