Louvre Museum Director Faces Backlash After $100 Million Jewelry Heist
The director of the Louvre in Paris is under fire for a significant security lapse that allowed thieves to make off with over $100 million in jewelry. In his first public comments since the incident, director Laurence de Cal labeled the event a “terrible failure,” admitting, “Despite our efforts, despite our hard work every day, we have failed.”
Mr. de Cal noted that there were issues with the museum’s perimeter security, specifying that the single camera monitoring the exterior was oddly positioned away from the balcony that led to the gallery housing the valuable items. He confirmed that all alarms in the museum were indeed triggered during the robbery.
A High-Profile Heist
The recent theft adds to a disturbing trend of high-profile museum break-ins that could raise alarms for other institutions. “We failed these gems,” De Cal stated, further explaining, “No one can protect themselves from a brutal thief – not even the Louvre.”
Paris prosecutor Laure Becuau discussed the heist on RTL radio, stating that the robbers seemingly employed a truck-mounted electric lift to execute their plan. They misled authorities by claiming the lift was needed for transporting goods. Becuau pointed out that if the stolen pieces are broken up or melted down, it might be challenging for the thieves to sell them at their full value.
Details of the Stolen Treasures
The intruders took eight coveted items, including a sapphire crown, a necklace, and a single earring from a set associated with 19th-century royal figures, as well as an emerald necklace and earrings linked to Empress Marie Louise, the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. They also made off with a diamond crown belonging to Empress Eugénie, along with a rare corsage ribbon brooch.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his dismay, saying, “The theft at the Louvre is an attack on a heritage we cherish, because it is our history.” He added that efforts are underway to recover the stolen works and bring those responsible to justice.
A National Concern
This robbery has ignited a national dialogue, with some officials comparing its significance to the 2019 Notre Dame fire. Becuau revealed that the number of investigators working on the case has surged from 60 to 100, indicative of its nationwide and international importance.
