The Loyola Phoenix, the student newspaper of Loyola University Chicago, recently issued an editor’s note to apologize for an Instagram post. This post referred to the suspect, who allegedly killed 18-year-old student Sheridan Gorman, as an “illegal immigrant.”
In the note, the editor explained that on March 23, the Phoenix’s Instagram account featured a headline stating, “Immigrant man charged with murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved.” The headline was not in line with the article’s core points and was removed shortly after it was posted to minimize any harm to the community.
Chicago lawmakers have condemned the way the situation has been handled, labeling the treatment of the murdered student as “disgusting.” The original post included descriptions that classified the accused individual, Jose Medina, as an “illegal immigrant,” which the editor acknowledged as inappropriate and inconsistent with the paper’s standards.
On a related note, a press release on Sunday identified Medina as a Venezuelan national apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol in May 2023. Following his release under the Biden administration, he has been charged with Gorman’s murder.
The editor’s note further emphasized that “human presence is not illegal,” and the terminology used will be adjusted accordingly. They expressed regret over the phrasing, highlighting the potential impact words can have in sensitive situations. They are committed to adhering to high journalistic standards while serving the Loyola, Rogers Park, and Chicago communities.
