Tragic Shooting Near Loyola University Chicago

Early Thursday morning, a shooting near Loyola University Chicago resulted in the death of an 18-year-old student identified as Sheridan Gorman. This incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Platte Boulevard, close to the university’s Lakeshore campus.

According to reports, Gorman was walking with a friend when a male suspect approached and began firing at them. Tragically, Gorman suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no one else was injured in the incident.

A safety alert sent to students indicated the shooting took place around 1:15 a.m. on the pier at Toby Prinz Beach, also known as Pratt Avenue Beach. Witnesses reported that the shooter was wearing a face covering.

Loyola University President Mark C. Reed reached out to the campus community via a letter, expressing his deep sorrow over the loss. He stated, “This is a tragic loss and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones and everyone who knew her.”

The university is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation unfolds. Thankfully, they have assured the community that there is currently no ongoing threat based on available information. Counseling services are being made available to those affected, and a wake for Gorman is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Madonna della Strada chapel.

As of now, police have not released any information regarding a suspect, and no arrests have been made. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and detectives are actively pursuing leads related to this and other recent violent incidents in the area.
