The LPGA has announced that several changes will be made to its annual match play event. The tournament has new sponsors, new dates on the schedule, an expanded field, and a new format.
With MGM Resorts International and T-Mobile as new sponsors of the event, there will be 96 players in the field. It’s called T-Mobile Match Play, powered by MGM Rewards. press release.
Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas will host the event April 3-7, 2024.
Even more exciting was the news that the wallet would be increased. This year’s tournament will see his prize money increased by a whopping 30%, and players’ hotel costs will also be covered.
The new format includes stroke play and match play.
This is similar to what the NCAA is doing now. To declare individual and team champions, the NCAA determines individual holders in stroke play, with the top eight teams advancing to match play to determine the team winner.
Athletes will participate in stroke play competition Wednesday through Friday. The number of players will be reduced to 65, and the tournament will be tied after 36 holes.
Once the third round is complete, the top eight players will advance to the match play portion of the weekend. Sunday will conclude the event with the championship match.
T-Mobile athlete Nelly Korda, one of the LPGA’s top stars, has already committed to attending the event. She’s excited about the changes coming to her one of the most fun tournaments of the season.
“We are thrilled that T-Mobile is committed to further supporting women’s golf through this event and as a partner of the KPMG Women’s Golf Championship,” she enthused. “The new format will test all of our players and we look forward to competing at Shadow Creek later this spring.”
So far, the field looks stacked with MGM Resorts ambassadors Danielle Kang, Anna Nordqvist, and Alison Lee playing. Jennifer Kupcho, Leona Maguire and Brooke Henderson will also be attending the event.
