LSU-Ole Miss Rivalry Heats Up with Legal Drama

The long-standing rivalry between LSU and Ole Miss is taking a new turn with the upcoming big game and Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford.

Princewill Umanmielen, a player for the Tigers, was served court documents on Tuesday in the LSU football facility’s parking lot, as reported by ESPN. This is part of a breach-of-contract lawsuit brought against him by Ole Miss.

Umanmielen is among several players who followed Kiffin to LSU after he left Ole Miss, where he had spent six seasons. Following Kiffin’s departure, Ole Miss filed a lawsuit in late July against Umanmielen and offensive lineman Devin Harper, seeking nearly $1 million in unpaid buyouts—$550,000 from Umanmielen and $400,000 from Harper, plus legal fees and court costs.

Court records from the Circuit Court of Lafayette County in Oxford, Mississippi, show that Umanmielen received a set of interrogatories, requests for document production, and admission requests related to the lawsuit on Tuesday.

When reached for comment, Ole Miss officials reiterated their previous statement and indicated they had no additional remarks.

The timing of this legal action is particularly striking, given that No. 8 Ole Miss is scheduled to host No. 7 LSU on Saturday. This will be Kiffin’s first game back at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since leaving Ole Miss, a move that stirred much controversy as it occurred during the Rebels’ College Football Playoff run. It’s shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated regular-season matches this year.

Interestingly, Harper has yet to be served with any legal documents concerning the case, according to the circuit court’s records. LSU officials reportedly knew that Ole Miss would attempt to serve Umanmielen before this weekend.

Sources have also mentioned that the lawsuit appears to focus more on holding LSU accountable for the $950,000 within its revenue-sharing cap rather than retrieving funds from the players involved.

According to the lawsuit, both Umanmielen and Harper are accused of breaching their revenue-sharing contracts within a 90-day timeframe. Umanmielen allegedly signed a contract to return to Ole Miss on January 3 this year, only to enter the transfer portal on January 20 and sign with the Tigers the next day. Harper is said to have signed on January 6 and then entered the portal shortly after, signing with LSU on January 16.

Umanmielen started his college journey at Nebraska, playing there for two seasons before moving to Ole Miss in 2025. He’s now leading the nation in sacks with five and is tied for first in tackles for loss with 6.5. On the other hand, Harper has yet to make a start at LSU.
