As Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota decides to drop out of his re-election bid amid various fraud scandals, Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is also in the Senate race, is facing pressure from one of her Republican challengers to step back as well.
“In the military, if your squad fails a mission, you’re not looking at a promotion,” Adam Schwartz, a former Navy SEAL and Republican candidate for the Minnesota Senate, stated in a recent press release. He praised Walz’s choice to not seek re-election and suggested that it’s time for Flanagan to make a similar announcement. Schwartz criticized her for her role in a tax increase of $18 billion and mentioned that she hasn’t effectively addressed ongoing issues of waste and fraud that keep costs rising. “Minnesotans deserve new leadership that brings back affordability and accountability,” he added.
Flanagan, working alongside Walz since 2019 as scandals began to surface, has recently faced heightened criticism for not doing enough to safeguard taxpayer funds, according to reports from Fox News Digital.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, representing Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, remarked that both Flanagan and the Democratic Party have faced serious allegations for allowing billions to be misappropriated from hardworking taxpayers. He also mentioned that Congresswoman Angie Craig is running for Senate.
“Just like Tim, maybe it’s time they reassess their candidacy,” he suggested.
Flanagan has a long-standing relationship with Walz that dates back to 2006, when she supported him during his successful congressional campaign. He later appointed her as his lieutenant governor, indicating that she has been crucial in shaping his decisions. “She’s been with me since the start, offering valuable insights,” Walz mentioned back in 2020, acknowledging their diverse backgrounds that provide different perspectives.
Fox News Digital sought comments from Flanagan’s campaign regarding the ongoing concerns.
Despite being a frontrunner, Flanagan’s handling of the fraud scandal has drawn scrutiny. Recently, she was spotted at a mall on a Somali TV show, wearing a hijab and showing support for Minnesota’s Somali community as the federal government investigates the fraudulent activities associated with them.
Since 2022, over 90 individuals have been indicted, notably from Minnesota’s sizeable Somali community, in what is termed the largest COVID-era fraud operation in the U.S. The total funds misappropriated from fraudulent schemes relating to food, housing, daycare centers, and Medicaid services remain under evaluation, with estimates suggesting losses could surpass $1 billion, possibly reaching $9 billion.
Schwartz stated in a video, “We need a complete overhaul and leadership change in Minnesota.” He questioned Flanagan’s silence regarding these issues, asking why she should advance to the U.S. Senate while Walz is resigning. “Isn’t that a fair question?” he added.
