Luigi Mangione expressed regret for appearing 'suspicious' prior to his arrest

Luigi Mangione seemed to express regret for being perceived as a “suspicious person” prior to his arrest in Pennsylvania on charges of killing Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare, in December 2024.

A video was released by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, following a sixth day of hearings aimed at determining whether certain evidence should be excluded from Mangione’s trial. His lawyers attempted but failed to persuade Judge Gregory Caro to block the video’s release.

Mangione was detained at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024. An employee reportedly alerted a coworker, who contacted the police after noticing Mangione’s behavior.

Body camera footage shared by prosecutors showed an officer responding to the report about a suspicious individual.

During the encounter, Mangione apologized, looking down at his phone, and identified himself as “Mark Rosario,” handing over his ID.

The officer explained that the individual who reported Mangione believed he resembled someone involved in a serious incident.

Prosecutors had earlier released various photos of Mangione’s belongings, which included identification and financial cards, along with his escape route from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati.

A 911 call from the McDonald’s manager had prompted authorities to respond, mentioning concerns that a customer might resemble the shooter from New York.

Altoona Police Officer Stephen Fox testified that he became convinced of Mangione’s involvement when he smiled at him during the encounter.

Mangione now faces multiple state and federal charges regarding the alleged murder.
