Luigi Mangione received ‘heart-shaped notes’ hidden in socks before court: DA

Luigi Mangione, the suspect who was accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last year, reportedly received a “heart-shaped” memo that was smuggled into socks that were smuggled into changes to clothing that his defense team had heard for his hearing, according to the office of Manhattan local lawyer Alvin Bragg.

The 26-year-old former Ivy Leaguer appeared tied up and wrapped in khaki pants, Lockport penny loafers and a green sweater under a supporter's wink bulletproof vest.

Prosecutors say Mangion's defense attorneys allegedly gave him clothes to Major Mike McKee, a New York court officer who oversaw the transport of prisoners, to avoid him appearing in prison jumpsuits. Investigator Sergeant Louis Capolpo conducted a search before giving the defendant the item.

“Inside the clothing items there was a new pair of cardboard-wrapped argyle socks,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a new court filing.

“What was secreted into the cardboard were two personal heart-shaped notebooks, one addressed to an unknown person named “Joan,” and the other tells Luigi, “I know there are thousands of people who want you luck.” ”

Capolpo seized the memo but allowed Mangion to wear socks. However, according to the prosecutor, he said, “He felt that 'they didn't look good' and took them off.

“Fortunately, the smuggled items were handwritten notes and not contraband that could hurt the transporter,” Seidemann added.

Mangione's team declined to comment, but shared another submission filed with his defense made on Wednesday.

“This was clearly inadvertent, and one of the two heart-shaped notes was not even addressed to Mr. Mangion,” Attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo wrote to the judge. “The district attorney's office superficially recognized the innocent nature of this event and did not mind warning the court at the time, so it was not a real danger or concern. If this 'case' is the basis for the danger mentioned by the prosecutor, it submits that this does not meet the standard that allows them to deny a reasonable request. ”

They go back and forth as prosecutors ask the court to deny Mangion's request to have a laptop in a prison cell. They say they are unnecessary privileges and are additional discovery material.

“We are calling for civilian witnesses, San Francisco police officers to identify Mangion's police, discoveries surrounding the prosecution's terrorism theory, and discoveries regarding the contents of electronic devices recovered from Mangion,” added Friedman Agnifilo.

In another submission, Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Zachary Kaplan listed many physical evidence police recovered in addition to alleged murder weapons.

Mangion had nearly $8,000 in cash for him when police arrested him. Two Faraday bags can be used to block phone signals, multiple hard drives and laptops, three wallets, iPhones, “33 other tablets” and other items. Police recovered evidence of food packaging that had been discarded with another phone call and DNA evidence near the crime scene.

Mangion faces federal and state charges in connection with Thompson's assassination. New York prosecutors have alleged it was a terrorist act.
