“He knew that because of the condition of his back, it would be impossible for him to date or be physically intimate,” Martin told the publication. “I remember him saying that to me and it just breaks my heart.”

A former high school classmate told the New York Times that Mangione lost contact with his family after undergoing back surgery.

R.J. Martin, a friend and former roommate from Hawaii, told CNN that Mangione had been complaining of back problems.

“I remember him telling me before he moved that he had back problems and wanted to get stronger in Hawaii,” Martin said. The roommate said Mangione's back pain was “traumatic and painful,” adding that he was bedridden for a week after taking surfing lessons.
