Luigi Mangione's lawyers criticize prosecutors and the NYPD for insufficient evidence of the mother's supposed statement to the police.

Legal Battle Over Evidence in High-Profile Case

In a surprising turn, lawyers representing Luigi Mangione are claiming that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD’s Chief of Detectives have failed to substantiate his mother’s alleged statement regarding witnessing her son kill United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This assertion came to light through recent court documents.

Releasing findings on Tuesday, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney discussed information the FBI obtained from the San Francisco Police Department at a press conference back in December 2024. A sergeant contacted the FBI after he believed the suspect depicted in a photo released by the NYPD looked like Mangione.

Documents indicate that Kenney recounted a conversation between Mangione’s mother and the San Francisco police, implying that she might have seen her son shoot and kill Thompson. However, he made it clear that she didn’t confirm it was her son in the photo but rather suggested the possibility of witnessing the act.

Mangione’s mother had filed a missing person report for her son on November 18, 2024. Now, defense attorneys are insisting that there’s no solid evidence supporting the claim that she made such a statement.

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo stated in a filing, “To date, no discovery documents have been provided to back the Chief of Detectives’ statements regarding Mrs. Mangione’s alleged remarks.” She went on to emphasize, “All findings thus far indicate that she made no such claim.”

Agnifilo expressed concern over the lack of correction from the District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD if, in fact, Mrs. Mangione never made that statement. She referred to various media reports that had circulated the supposed statement, including the recently released novel “Luigi: The Making and the Meaning.”

She pointed out that Kenney’s “unsubstantiated claims” continue to be cited, noting its reappearance in the novel “Reckless,” published on November 4, 2025.

Mangione’s attorneys have requested that a judge find the Manhattan prosecutor’s office insufficient in its handling of information regarding Mangione’s mother.

This high-profile case involves Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges related to Thompson’s murder outside a hotel in midtown Manhattan during the company’s annual investor conference. The 27-year-old was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a five-day investigation.

The federal government is reportedly pursuing the death penalty in its case against him, and Mangione is scheduled to return to court on December 5 for proceedings related to the federal charges.
