Lewis Gill Takes Steps Towards Recovery
Lewis Gill might still have at least a month ahead before he’s back in action, but on Saturday morning, he stepped onto the mound at Yankee Stadium for the first time since spring training.
As part of his rehabilitation from some significant strain injuries, Gill participated in a live batting practice session, throwing around 20 pitches. He reported feeling optimistic about his return to the Yankees’ rotation.
“I felt really good,” Gill mentioned through an interpreter. “It’s a process—you heal gradually. It felt great to be on the mound and face some batters.”
If everything goes smoothly, Gill might not make his debut until early August. It’s a bit uncertain, especially considering how things have progressed for the Yankees during his recovery period. But if he comes back healthy and pitching like his usual self after the trade deadline, he could really contribute to the team’s efforts this season.
Manager Aaron Boone expressed his satisfaction with the gradual recovery process, noting, “It’s fortunate that the injury allowed for a slow build-up, and every stage has gone well so far. We’re starting to ramp things up now.” Boone emphasized the importance of checking off these milestones as Gill continues his rehabilitation.
Gill plans to have more live batting practice sessions before heading out for rehab assignments, where he’ll work on gradually increasing his pitch count.
Typically, the Yankees like their pitchers to hit a pitch count of around 75-80 before returning, although Boone hinted that they might adjust based on the team’s needs when Gill becomes ready.
During his practice, Gill faced off against former bullpen catcher Peter Selute and information coordinator Ryan McLaughlin, with each of them getting two at-bats.
“I think the process has been quite beneficial,” Gill reflected. “However, it requires a strong mindset to push through and stay focused during those long hours off the field. But I’m always concentrated on returning as quickly as possible.”
