MILWAUKEE — Mets Shift Roster to Accommodate Luis Robert Jr.

Louis Robert Jr. is set to play for the Mets, which means a shuffle in the lineup involving two standout rookies.

During their latest match against the Brewers, which was their third consecutive loss at 8-3, the Mets kept Carson Benge on the bench while placing Roberts in center field and AJ Ewing in right.

Robert had been sidelined for two and a half months due to a herniated lumbar disc but is now on the road to recovery.

As he looks ahead to the last couple of months of the season, he shared his aspirations: “I want to be healthy and get on the field as much as I can,” he stated through an interpreter. “Other than that, I think from a performance standpoint, as long as I’m on the field, I’ll be fine.”

Starting the game, Robert had already hit two home runs and holds a slash line of .224/.327/.329 across 24 games this season.

Interim manager Andy Green plans to have Robert play in center field about two out of three days. The Mets also have Jorge Polanco as their main designated hitter, with Juan Soto taking up that role as well.

There’s speculation that the Mets might pursue Robert further before the August 3 trade deadline.

On Tuesday, the Mets will see Brandon Sproat again, who was traded to the Brewers earlier in the year along with Jett Williams for Freddy Peralta and Tobias Meyers.

Sproat has participated in 18 games this season, with 16 as a starter, finishing with a 5.16 ERA. He made his MLB debut with the Mets last season, putting up a 4.79 ERA over four starts.

“When managing a farm system, you don’t want to lose a promising player,” remarked Green, who has moved from overseeing player development to interim manager. “Jet and Brandon were guys we were really keen on… [Sproat] was a first-round pick, and I liked him all along. It was a tough call, but acquiring a front-line starter often requires sacrifices.”

To make space for Robert on the 26-man roster, Eric Wagaman has been sent to Triple-A Syracuse.

Meanwhile, Zach Short has also been dealt a tough blow against Syracuse.
