Luis Torrens hits another home run as his greater playing time with the Mets continues to be beneficial

The Mets recognized the value of Luis Torrence, largely thanks to his defensive skills, which led them to offer him a two-year contract extension earlier this season.

Initially a promising prospect for the Yankees, Torrence carved out a reputation as an exceptional defensive player.

However, he has since found his footing at the plate as well, earning a spot in the majors.

Recently, Torrence has been showing off his power, hitting four home runs in just six starts. On Sunday, his contribution helped the Mets secure a 4-3 win against the Nationals at Citi Field.

Christian Scott, after completing the longest start of his major league career, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We love throwing to him. Anytime he can contribute offensively, we love it.”

Throughout the season, Torrence has made adjustments defensively.

He has played the same number of innings as Francisco Alvarez, and interestingly, Mets pitchers have a 3.63 ERA when Torrence is behind the plate, as opposed to a 4.56 ERA with Alvarez catching.

Now, while he may not hit with Alvarez’s power, it’s clear why the Mets frequently rely on Torrence as a catcher, often utilizing Alvarez in the lineup as a designated hitter.

More frequent playing time has proven beneficial for both Torrence and the Mets.

Torrence remarked that increased game time has greatly aided his batting performance, saying, “Hugely.”

He added, through an interpreter, “The more opportunities you have to play, the easier it will be. You have to take advantage of it.”

Interim manager Andy Green has been observing this growth in Torrence for some time now.

Interestingly, Torrence made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2017, while Green was managing there.

The Padres selected him from the Yankees during the Rule 5 Draft, despite him being just 20 and having never played above A-ball.

Green admitted he was apprehensive about employing the inexperienced Torrence back then, saying, “I wasn’t excited about acquiring a player from rookie ball.” He added, “The work he’s put in over the last 10 years to get to where he is now is fun to watch.” It’s evident he’s making a significant impact for the team.

On Sunday, Torrence launched a 405-foot shot to center field that nearly cleared the park. Green noted, “He’s always hit the ball well in that direction.”

Green also suggested that Torrence’s recent success could be attributed to his “intelligent hitting” and having enjoyable experiences playing in various parks.

As for that impressive home run, Green commented, “That ball got crushed. It’s not going to be easy out there,” confirming the excitement surrounding Torrence’s performance.
