Doncic Finds Solace in Basketball Amid Personal Turmoil

On Thursday, Luka Doncic shared that basketball is providing him a sense of “comfort” as he navigates personal challenges, particularly a contentious custody dispute with his ex-fiancée.

Following a standout performance, where he scored 51 points in a victory over the Bulls, a Slovenian journalist inquired about how Doncic manages to excel on the court during tough personal times.

Responding in Slovenian, Doncic, 27, who has been dealing with a complicated breakup with Anamaria Gortes, chose not to delve deeply into his personal issues but did note that he has improved at compartmentalizing his life.

“This is my job,” he stated. “I have to be here. They pay me a lot to play, so basketball brings me a sense of security.” In a way, it’s his grounding force amid the chaos.

Doncic and Gortes, who were engaged last July and share two daughters, recently announced their separation. Reports indicate that Doncic is currently involved in a custody battle, which raised some concerns leading to police involvement during his last visit to Slovenia in December. However, there were no indications of any criminal activity.

To add to the complexity, court documents have shown that Gortes filed for child support on the same day Doncic confirmed their split. That revelation certainly complicates things.

Visiting patients at UCLA Health Medical Center offered Doncic a moment of clarity. “When you go there, you realize there’s nothing actually wrong with your life,” he reflected. “Health is the most important thing, so you understand that your problems might not be so big after all.”

Doncic’s game against the Bulls marked just his second match since his personal matters gained public attention. In his previous outing against the Timberwolves, he managed to net 31 points in a solid win.

Looking ahead, the Lakers are set to face off against the Nuggets at home on Saturday night.
