Luka Doncic Jokes About Golf with Austin Reeves

Luka Doncic didn’t shy away from some light-hearted banter with his Lakers teammate, Austin Reeves. When asked by Rich Lerner from Golf Channel if Reeves would give him some golf tips, Doncic quipped, “He’s afraid I’m going to be better than him.”

Since Doncic’s trade to the Lakers in February 2025, the pair has enjoyed a close relationship, frequently teasing one another.

In the interview, Doncic mentioned that he got into golf after visiting Top Golf, despite being asked if LeBron James or Reeves were the ones who introduced him to the sport.

When Lerner referred to Reeves as a plus-2 golfer, Doncic confirmed, “Yeah, he’s a plus-2. He’s fine.” The friendly ribbing continued when discussions turned to trash talk on the basketball court; Doncic admitted, “Yeah, that too. A little less, but.”

Though Doncic is relatively new to golf, he finds enjoyment in the sport, describing it as both relaxing and addictive. He has stated, “There’s a lot of things I want to do over 36 holes. That’s eight hours.” He added that while Reeves and James have assisted him with golf in the past, the real challenge lies in being mentally patient, as he considers golf tougher than basketball.

As Doncic and Reeves are having fun on the golf course during the offseason, the Lakers are shifting gears following James’ departure this summer. Doncic seems ready to step up as the face of the franchise and lead the team toward their 18th NBA championship.

Meanwhile, expectations for Reeves have skyrocketed, especially after the Lakers secured him with a $185 million contract extension that will keep him in Los Angeles for the next four years.
