As the Lakers begin to transition away from the era of LeBron James, they recognize that a significant part of the franchise will leave with him.
Perhaps the most notable loss will be the four-time MVP’s leadership and vast experience accumulated over two decades in the NBA.
The absence of his insights and guidance can’t easily be replaced.
However, the Lakers are optimistic about their current star players stepping up in the wake of James’ departure.
Luka Doncic seems poised to take on a more prominent leadership role as the team embarks on this new chapter.
His readiness for this challenge became evident during a recent minicamp in Slovenia.
In a 24-minute video he shared on his YouTube channel, Doncic emphasized the importance of leadership. “Probably the leadership role is what matters to me more now than it did five years ago,” he noted.
Reflecting on his early years in the league, he admitted, “I wasn’t the leader I was supposed to be.” Now, he views leadership as a crucial component of his role.
Since joining the Lakers in February 2025, Doncic’s commitment to his teammates has been clear.
For instance, he treated them to a Porsche Driving Experience during the preseason in October 2025 and surprised everyone with e-bikes for Christmas, highlighting his growth as a teammate since moving to Los Angeles.
Recently, he organized a five-day getaway for his teammates, which included a charter flight, meals at his favorite restaurants, and various activities like golfing and enjoying the sights of Ljubljana.
The positive feedback from his teammates was overwhelming.
Collin Sexton expressed his enjoyment, saying, “We had an amazing time. Great experience. Nothing but good vibes. Luka, man, appreciate you for bringing us out to your country.”
Going forward, leadership will be essential for the Lakers. James was one of nine players from last season’s roster who are not returning.
Other notable departures include Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura, which leaves Doncic, Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jake LaRavia as the only returning players with significant playing time last season.
Coach JJ Redick highlighted the importance of team cohesion, stating during a joint appearance with GM Rob Pelinka that the most successful teams have tended to be the most connected.
As he enters his third year coaching the Lakers, he plans to emphasize this theme throughout the upcoming season.
Redick remarked, “There were times last year… where the team was connected. I really believe this group is gonna be connected from Day 1. And they already are.”
This connection seems to be partly a result of Doncic’s leadership.
“With so many new players on the team, building chemistry is really important,” Doncic mentioned. “That was the first thought, just to get the guys together. That’s why I wanted to do it.”
