Illini Quarterback Stars in Music City Bowl
Luke Altmayer, the quarterback for the Fighting Illini, had a notable performance in the Music City Bowl against the Tennessee Volunteers. Although Illinois secured the win, a particular play in the third quarter really captured the interest of college football fans.
With the Illini leading by three points, Altmayer had the ball on a first down at Tennessee’s 41-yard line. After taking the snap, he stepped back and executed a pass. Faking a throw to the right, he maneuvered the ball back toward the middle of the field.
During this play, he collided with the officials, an unusual moment that actually worked out in his favor—he managed to break free for a first down before continuing his run. Notably, he ended up scoring a touchdown later during that drive.
Tennessee responded strongly, with Deshaun Bishop scoring a rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. They later took the lead after a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown by Joakim Dodson. However, Altmayer wasn’t finished. He went on to complete a 13-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in a field goal by David Olano, securing a 30-28 victory for Illinois.
In terms of stats, Altmayer completed 20 out of 33 passes, netting 196 passing yards and one touchdown pass. He also added 54 rushing yards, contributing a rushing touchdown as well.
This win marked a significant achievement for the University of Illinois, as they recorded back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in program history. Coach Bret Bielema made an interesting remark post-game, mentioning that this group is indeed writing their own history, moving beyond what has been done in the past.
Currently, the team holds a 2-1 record in bowl games while under Bielema’s leadership.
