Luke Smallbone on the Power of Family: It’s ‘More Important Than it Ever Has Been’

The singer, who is part of the award-winning tandem For King and Country, says the “power of family” can change the world, and a new movie about his parents invites moviegoers to be part of the solution. I hope to encourage you to do so.

Luke Smallbone of For King and Country told Christian Headline that his parents, David and Helen Smallbone, traveled from Australia to the United States with big dreams. David said he was nearly five years old when he was forced to do odd jobs because his job wasn’t going well. The whole family helped with things like cleaning the house and mowing the lawn.

Their story will be retold in the next movie The unsung herois scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26th and stars Daisy Betts, Candace Cameron Bure, and Lucas Black.

“I learned how to push a lawn mower when I was five years old and loved it. I still love mowing,” Luke Smallbone told Christian Headlines.

The film depicts the father as depressed and the mother as unwavering in her beliefs. Eventually, Luke’s younger sister, Rebecca Smallbone (Rebecca St. James on stage), she became a popular Christian singer after CCM artist Eddie DeGarmo gave her a chance. . However, much of the film depicts the family struggling to make ends meet.

One glass jar in the movie contains all the money they collected from their chores and all the money they had for groceries.

“I remember everything,” he said. “A lot of people have asked me, ‘Was it really that scary to remember everything?’ [that] Being loved can help you overcome all kinds of trials and tribulations. And I am aware that I am poor, that I am short of money, that I may not have enough food. .But you don’t really care. If it’s the other way around, if you’re going through something like this and you’re not loved, I think there’s trauma in everything you go through. ”

His parents refused to “give up on their faith” or “give up on Jesus,” he said.

“Why do you turn your back on what is the basis of wisdom?” he asked.

The film’s name comes from his parents, the “unsung heroes” of his life.

“My wife and I have four children. I believe strongly in the power of families. I think families are more important now than ever in the history of the world,” Smallbone said. Ta. “And yet we don’t appreciate it to the level that it should be. And my hope is that people see stories like this and walk out of the theater thinking, ‘I want to be a better father.’ ” Or my son says, “I want to be a better brother.”Or is it my daughter? [says,] “I want to be a better sister.” Or the mother says, “I want to be a better mother.” I want to learn to have constant faith. ”

“Because I think if there’s going to be a revival in America, it’s going to either be through persecution or it’s going to be through families, because families are so important.”
