Burnley are more of an unknown quantity. Vincent Kompany shocked the industry by trading the Clarets for Bayern Munich in the summer, leaving them to scratch out for a replacement, eventually plumping for Scott Parker. The former Fulham boss was greeted by 40 professionals a month ago and has the complex job of creating a cohesive unit out of what Kompany left for him. The Clarets steamrollered the Championship but were desperately poor for much of their year in the Premier League. It will be interesting how the look tonight.

10 minutes: Luton kept their cool and kept the ball moving, searching for gaps in Burnley’s midfield.
8 min: Pires proved to be as useful a player as anyone at left-back for Burnley throughout last season and has only just played eight minutes on the debut.
Meanwhile, Adebayo had a chance on the edge of the box but his shot lacked power and Trafford missed it.
Goals! Luton 0-1 Burnley (Brownhill, 6)
Talk about how great Brownhill was… the central midfielder made a great run to get away from Nelson and was able to latch onto a perfect pass from Pires to roll the ball between Kaminski’s legs.
6 min: Nelson has great composure on the ball in central midfield and he will be up against Brownhill and Cullen, two of the best in the league.
4 minutes: Neither side has taken any action approaching an offensive in the early stages, likely conserving their energy until the sun goes down.
2 min: Burnley’s passing at the back was one of their biggest failings last season and Luton will undoubtedly be pressuring them.
Luton are doing something quite similar but they are in no rush to beat the press.

The players are out. Luton are wearing the orange home kit from last season and are continuing to do so for the second consecutive season.

Luton Academy graduates Joe Johnson and Zac Nelson will start tonight.
“We’ve had a good pre-season,” said Rob Edwards. “Tonight is a celebration of our Academy. We’ve got two Academy players starting and two more teenagers on the bench who have done really well in pre-season.”
“We are expecting a really good performance. I think both teams will make mistakes but that’s OK. We are evolving as a football club and we want to develop our own players. They are eligible to play.”
Sky created a montage that gave the impression they were close to staying. Unfortunately, they were completely out of control.
Sander Berge will miss tonight’s game against Burnley with a minor injury.
Scott Parker has a cool new job as a music teacher and spends his weekends surfing in Cornwall.
I think I watched 11 Burnley games last season. It will be interesting to see how they change under Parker. I assume he will use Vicinho in central midfield, which is an intriguing plan. He has two excellent wingers in Odberto and Coléo. It will be especially good to see the American back; he looked promising in the Premier League but injury ended his season early.

The Championship has started with a bang, but what better way to end the season’s opening weekend than with a Premier League match for the 2023-24 season?

A resurgent Ross Barkley and a string of loanees have returned to their home clubs, but Luton still have a squad that has struggled in the top flight and will be hoping to return to the top flight under manager Rob Edwards.
