Lyft Driver Accused of Rape and Kidnapping as an Illegal Immigrant

Police Accusations Against Lyft Driver in Utah

Authorities in Sandy, Utah, have made troubling allegations against a Lyft driver involved in the assault of a female passenger.

On September 17th, 26-year-old Alejandro Rendon Segovia was taken into custody. The accusations stem from an incident reported on August 30th, where he faced charges related to rape and obstruction of justice. The specific charges include rape of an addict, classified as a first-degree felony, alongside a second-degree felony for obstructing the police.

Concerns are rising regarding crimes committed by immigrants working for rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber. For instance, in August, a tech company CEO was reportedly attacked by an Uber driver in Charleston, and another driver in Texas faced charges for an attempted assault on a female passenger.

The encounter in Utah began around 4 AM when a 19-year-old woman requested a Lyft ride to her home. However, police later stated they could not find evidence supporting her claim of being dropped off nearby.

Investigators discovered that Segovia, a Mexican citizen, did not take her home as expected. Instead, he stopped in different parking lots and allegedly assaulted her while she was intoxicated.

The report details a chaotic situation where Segovia reportedly yelled at the victim and hit her, prompting her to scream and request to exit the vehicle. Despite her attempts to leave, he persuaded her to stay with promises of reaching her home.

After the assault, Segovia left her on the roadside, approximately a mile from her residence. The victim later sought medical attention, where doctors noted bruises on her legs and inner thighs.

An excerpt from court documents stated that Segovia misused his role as a rideshare driver to exploit the victim, who was under the influence. He was supposed to take her home but instead led her away from that location.

Following his arrest, Segovia initially refused to provide a DNA sample as mandated by the court, necessitating intervention by law enforcement.

Authorities suspect there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Uber, in particular, has faced significant criticism regarding sexual assault incidents, with reports indicating one every eight minutes over a five-year period. Between 2017 and 2022, Uber reportedly logged over 400,000 reports of sexual misconduct in the U.S.
