Mac Jones discusses the NFL combine as the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers

NFL Combine Drama Shifts Focus to Behind-the-Scenes Moves

The NFL Combine is a significant event for college football prospects, attracting fans globally. This year, over 300 top athletes will gather at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to undergo drills, interviews, and physical evaluations, which can reshape their careers.

However, much of the drama unfolds out of the public eye. While the athletes compete for the attention of scouts from all 32 NFL teams, head coaches and front office personnel are also engaging in their own strategies for upcoming trades or roster changes.

This week, particularly for the San Francisco 49ers, the intensity behind closed doors is palpable.

Conversations mostly center around star left tackle Trent Williams’ future and contract situation. Yet, there’s growing chatter about backup quarterback Mac Jones. Teams like the Raiders, Jets, and Cardinals are actively seeking starting quarterbacks for the next season. It seems Las Vegas is poised to select Indiana QB and Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza with their first overall pick.

Other teams, including the Dolphins, Steelers, Browns, Colts, Vikings, and Falcons, could also be searching for new starting quarterbacks. The Dolphins are likely to part ways with Tua Tagovailoa, while the Browns and Vikings are reportedly concerned about their current quarterbacks, with Cleveland’s Shedule Sanders and Dillon Gabriel and Minnesota’s JJ McCarthy facing scrutiny.

“To be effective, we need a baseline level of quarterback play,” noted Rob Brzezinski, executive vice president of football operations for the Vikings. “This is largely due to the injuries and unfortunate scenarios our players have faced, but we’re open to exploring all our options.” He added that finding a mutually beneficial and economically viable path is crucial, noting the many factors involved in making such decisions.

Injuries are also a theme this season. Daniel Jones, once a promising option, faced a devastating Achilles tendon rupture and might be out for the entire year. Meanwhile, Michael Penix partially tore his ACL and could miss the season’s start.

With all these developments, Jones seems to be a leading candidate, putting the 49ers in a strong negotiating position.

Interestingly, many had predicted a collapse for the 49ers after Brock Purdy’s injury last year. Instead, Jones seized the opportunity under head coach Kyle Shanahan, leading to an 8-3 record and a very successful season.

He threw for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns, completing 69.6% of his passes with a 62.3 QBR, showcasing a remarkable recovery.

Originally drafted by the Patriots in 2021, Jones showed immense promise early in his career with a stellar rookie season. He registered 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns, even earning a Pro Bowl nod. However, subsequent years saw a decline, ultimately resulting in his trade to Jacksonville in 2024, where he served as a backup for Trevor Lawrence. His time with the Jaguars was brief, culminating in a release, but joining San Francisco reignited his career and put him back in contention for a starting role.

Only time will reveal if he secures a primary position or continues as a backup in the Bay Area.
