Culkin Reflects on John Candy and Personal Struggles

Macaulay Culkin’s relationship with John Candy went beyond the screen. Culkin, who starred alongside Candy in 1989’s “Uncle Buck” and again in “Home Alone” the following year, shared some heartfelt thoughts about the late actor in a recent documentary. He revealed that Candy was one of the few people in Hollywood who really checked in on him during a tough time, particularly concerning his father, Kit Culkin, whom he refers to as a “monster.”

“I think he always had a really great instinct,” Culkin said in “John Candy: I Like Me.” He elaborated that it wasn’t difficult for Candy to see the true nature of his father, who was already causing issues before Culkin’s rise to fame. “It wasn’t hard to see how difficult my father was,” he said. “He was already a monster.”

Culkin had previously described his upbringing in a household where his father was abusive, both physically and mentally. He felt that his father even controlled his earnings, leading Culkin to cut ties with his parents over financial matters.

In the documentary, he reminisced how Candy seemed to sense the problem much earlier than others. The way Candy would frequently check in suggested a genuine concern for his well-being. “That doesn’t happen often,” he remarked. “As time passed, it didn’t really happen much. I want to get more of it in my life. It’s important to remember that.”

Candy was well-regarded in the comedy scene during the 80s and early 90s, known for films like “The Great Outdoors” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” He passed away from a heart attack in 1994 at just 43 years old.

Reflecting on his own life, Culkin mentioned that he hasn’t communicated with his father in over three decades and expressed a complicated mix of feelings toward him. “Yeah, he deserves it too,” he stated during a podcast appearance, discussing his father’s distant relationship with his grandchildren, including Culkin’s own two sons.

It’s a lot to unpack, really—growing up in the shadow of a notorious figure can be challenging. Now, as Culkin navigates fatherhood himself, he finds it all surreal. “I have my own kids, so it’s like kicking some dust,” he said, contemplating how his father raised children while being so disconnected.
