Macaulay Culkin Shares That John Candy Was the First to Recognize His Father's Abuse in a Documentary

Macaulay Culkin Reflects on John Candy in New Documentary

Macaulay Culkin has shared his thoughts on the legendary comedian John Candy in a newly released documentary titled John Candy: I Like Me, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Culkin, known for his role in Home Alone, first collaborated with Candy in John Hughes’ 1989 film Uncle Buck. He reminisced about how Candy viewed him during that time.

“I think he always had a really great instinct. He saw things,” Culkin mentioned in the documentary. “Even before the fame and the chaos, it wasn’t hard to see what my father was going through. It was a secret, really. He was already famous and dealing with its ups and downs, which made it more complex.”

Culkin described feeling a strong “paternal” energy from Candy, mentioning that such connections are rare. “As time went on, it didn’t often happen,” he recalled. “I wish I could experience that more. It’s something important to hold onto. I remember the absence of John quite distinctly.”

This documentary, directed by Colin Hanks and featuring insights from Ryan Reynolds, also includes interviews with Steve Martin and Candy’s daughter, Jennifer Candy Sullivan. She expressed that her father’s kindness toward Culkin was genuine, emphasizing, “When I learned about Macaulay Culkin, it felt natural because that was our dad. He understood child actors and wouldn’t just overlook someone like that.”

Hanks added his perspective, saying, “The way John took the time to check in on Macaulay, that really struck me. He connected with everyone he worked with.”

John Candy: I Like Me will be available globally on Prime Video starting October 10th.
