Venezuelan Opposition Leader Detained Again
On Monday, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure was arrested in Caracas shortly after being freed from prison. Maria Corina Machado shared on X that her ally, Juan Pablo Guanipa, had been taken by armed men in civilian clothing in the Los Choros area of the capital. “We demand his immediate release,” she stated.
The human rights organization Foro Penal reported that 35 political prisoners, including Guanipa, were released over the weekend. However, it seems there are now efforts by Venezuelan authorities to place him under house arrest, with claims that he violated his release conditions—though specifics were not provided, leaving some questions lingering.
Guanipa’s political party, Primero Justicia, noted on X that he was forced into a silver Toyota Corolla during the incident. In a strong statement, they attributed responsibility for this endangerment to Jorge Rodríguez and Diosdado Cabello, urging the international community to intervene and end the persecution against opposition members.
Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has yet to respond regarding these developments in Venezuela. Recently, President Trump characterized the release of political prisoners as a positive humanitarian step by Venezuela’s government, although concerns about the overall situation remain valid. As of February 2, a staggering 687 political prisoners reportedly still remain in detention, according to Foro Penal.
