Controversy Surrounds Macklemore for Antisemitic Remarks
Rapper Macklemore has found himself at the center of controversy recently due to remarks he made during the Ed Sheeran “Loop Tour.” His on-stage antics, which included antisemitic slogans, led to his dismissal as Sheeran’s opening act. This isn’t the first time the Seattle-based artist has been involved in inflammatory behavior.
In a recent performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, shouted phrases like “Free Palestine” and accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza.
“I wanted to stand up here on stages across America and say two words that are near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine,” he declared to the crowd.
Wearing a Palestinian Keffiyeh, he made his statements while images proclaiming “Free Palestine” flashed on the Jumbotron behind him. This incident ultimately resulted in him being cut from the remaining performances on Sheeran’s tour.
Macklemore’s past includes further examples of what many have interpreted as antisemitic actions. One noteworthy incident occurred years ago when he donned a costume that can be described as “Jewface,” reminiscent of blackface, where he appeared in stereotypical depictions of Jewish individuals.
In 2014, he took the stage in Seattle wearing a wig, a fake beard, and an exaggerated nose, drawing criticism for embodying a caricature of a Jewish person, which is a long-standing antisemitic stereotype. He even performed a Nazi salute while in this costume.
He later claimed that he did not intend to portray a Jewish individual and characterized the outfit as merely a surprise for a private event. He expressed regret, stating, “There is no worse feeling than being misunderstood, especially when people are hurt or offended … I respect all cultures and all people.”
Additionally, in 2024, Macklemore released a song that included the lyrics “fuck the police,” alongside praise for the pro-Palestinian organization known as Students for Justice in Palestine. This particular song commemorated an event where the group allegedly intimidated fellow students and vandalized property at Columbia University.
Prior to his costume controversy, he had shared far-fetched theories on social media. For example, in 2009, he claimed that former President George W. Bush orchestrated the September 11 attacks. When called out, he suggested he was only quoting another artist’s lyrics.
At a benefit concert for Palestinians in 2024, he became controversial again when he yelled “fuck America,” which led to backlash and subsequently cost him a headliner spot at a Las Vegas music festival.
Earlier remarks have also drawn attention, such as his 2016 apology for his “white privilege” and statements suggesting that white people have inherent racism and need to engage more deeply in racial discussions.
While Macklemore continues to stir conversation and controversy, he frequently maintains that he is being “misunderstood” and insists that he does not harbor hatred.
