Public Backlash Against Macron Amid Ongoing Unrest
French President Emmanuel Macron faced significant public criticism after attending a Céline Dion concert in Paris on Friday night, while riots continued to disrupt the country. His perceived disconnect from the unfolding crisis led many to describe him as indifferent and out of touch.
Macron and his wife, Brigitte, enjoyed the concert from a private box, seemingly unaware of the turmoil occurring across France, where frustration with his government has boiled over into violent protests.
In a glaring contrast, the country was engulfed in chaos, marked by mass looting, clashes with police, vandalism, and even arson targeting government facilities.
One angry protester drew a parallel between Macron and his wife and historic figures Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, who faced execution during the French Revolution. Lina Bernard, a rally organizer, expressed indignation, suggesting that the couple acted as if there were no issues to address.
As of Saturday evening, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported around 400 arrests in the past two days. He noted that about 550,000 people participated in 110 marches nationwide, while organizers claimed the number was closer to 800,000.
Nuñez described participants labeled as “extremely violent, radical far-left groups,” indicating their intent to provoke confrontations with law enforcement and target public infrastructure. He added that many offenders had also attempted to loot businesses, with most arrests involving adults.
Protests in Paris saw police deploy tear gas and water cannons against crowds who were throwing fireworks and other projectiles at officers, particularly in the Place de la République area.
Looking ahead, Macron is set to leave office next year, and current polling indicates the upcoming presidential election could see a showdown between Marine Le Pen of the National Rally and Jean-Luc Mélenchon from the leftist La France Insoumise party.
