Macron Reveals Increase in Defence Funding

French Military Spending Set to Double by 2027

France plans to increase its military budget significantly, with an additional $4 billion allocated for 2026 and another $3.5 billion for 2027. President Emmanuel Macron announced this during a speech on the eve of Bastille Day, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced defense spending amid rising threats to freedom and security in Europe.

Macron described the current global climate as “tumultuous,” highlighting the challenges posed by imperialism and annexation. He asserted that the threat to liberty has never been more severe since 1945. “We must be able to face the threat of Russia,” he added, underscoring the stakes involved.

In a report by Le Figaro, Macron stated that maintaining European peace hinges on the decisions of current states. He noted that in a world rearranging itself post-conflict, strength is paramount, with “the strongest law wins, no more rules.” His call for a robust France is framed as essential for controlling its destiny in this changing landscape.

Macron highlighted the need to pay attention to rising threats from countries like Iran and China, suggesting that protecting freedom in the current environment requires a certain level of fear. He remarked on the importance of societal defense, referring to the push by NATO leaders to absorb public support into security efforts, thereby ensuring readiness and capability in the face of potential conflict.

“Everyone has to be in the battle post,” he insisted, stressing collective responsibility in the defense sector.

Under Macron’s proposed budget, France’s defense spending will effectively double by 2027, rising from $37 billion annually in 2017 to a projected $75 billion. However, questions persist regarding the sustainability of such an increase, especially amid high national debt, currently over 100% of GDP. While the annual cost of services exceeds the 2025 defense budget significantly, the economic growth trajectory appears less favorable, with only a slight rise from 2% to 3% of GDP anticipated.

During the Bastille Day celebration, Macron presided over a grand military parade in Paris, noted as one of the finest displays of military prowess globally. Observers remarked on the discipline and precision of the troops, suggesting a visible commitment to national security in his appearance.
