Macron States That Ukraine Summit Should Be Held in Europe Following Trump Conversation

European Leaders Discuss Ukraine Peace Ahead of Key Meeting

European leaders are setting conditions for progress in Ukraine’s peace process before a pivotal bilateral meeting between the US and Russia on Friday, which follows a conversation involving President Donald Trump.

President Trump had a strategic call lasting about an hour with European leaders, including Ukraine’s president Volodimir Zelensky, UK’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, NATO’s Mark Latte, and Ursula von der Leyen from the European Union. This discussion is seen as a prelude to the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, aiming to advance efforts to conclude Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Before the call commenced on Wednesday, Trump acknowledged his European counterparts, stating, “I’ll talk to European leaders for a while. They’re amazing people who want the deal to happen.” He indicated a newfound appreciation for Europe’s leadership in light of his commitment to support Ukraine.

Yet, Trump has voiced frustration, claiming that the legacy media portrays his upcoming meeting with Putin as a failure even before it kicks off. By merely inviting Putin to speak publicly, he feels it could create an unwarranted perception of a victory for Russia. He seems particularly miffed by the bias he perceives in the press, suggesting that no matter the concessions made, he would receive negative coverage.

Following the call, European leaders expressed their thoughts, with von der Leyen remarking that the discussion was “very good,” and Merz indicating a desire to see success in the upcoming talks. However, demands became apparent quickly. Macron emphasized that future discussions should not occur in neutral territories but instead include Trump, Putin, and Zelensky directly.

Macron commented on the need for future trilateral talks to take place in a European country that is acceptable to all parties involved, underlining that discussions concerning Ukraine’s future should not occur without Zelensky present. German leader Merz added that a five-point list of European expectations would be presented to Trump and Putin during their discussions. He reiterated that individual security interests must be respected, particularly those concerning Europe and Ukraine.

Additionally, Merz highlighted the necessity for robust security guarantees for Ukraine, insisting that future troop restrictions should not apply. He believes these conditions must align with the agreed-upon transatlantic security framework, remaining true to the commitments Trump has outlined.

Trump appears to acknowledge that he is prepared to impose further sanctions, albeit only if deemed necessary, according to Merz.

Meanwhile, Zelensky reiterated his position regarding territorial integrity, emphasizing the constraints imposed by the Ukrainian constitution. He stated, “My stance remains unchanged; we cannot discuss territorial concessions without considering the will of our nation and our people.”

This week, Trump expressed frustration with Zelensky’s constitutional adherence concerning territorial issues. He remarked that it seems contradictory for Zelensky to seek constitutional approval for land negotiations while engaging in warfare. Trump further emphasized that the Ukrainian people deserve peace and should not concede territory.

Recent surveys indicate a growing sentiment among Ukrainians for an end to the conflict, with many supporting negotiations to conclude the war as swiftly as possible.
