French Prime Minister Ousted in Confidence Vote

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to appoint a new Prime Minister, marking the fourth change in leadership within the past year. This shift follows the removal of Prime Minister François Bayrou after he lost a crucial vote of confidence.

On Monday, Bayrou faced a significant defeat, with the vote tallying 364 against him and 194 in favor. The confidence vote is a routine parliamentary procedure that gauges legislative support for the government or its leader. Although Bayrou initiated the vote to bolster backing for his austerity measures, he likely understood the risks involved.

“The biggest risk was to keep things going without changing anything, keep politics as usual,” he remarked. “Submission to debt is like submission through military force, either controlled by weapons or by creditors.”

According to France’s constitutional rules, a Prime Minister who loses such a vote is obliged to resign. Bayrou, who took office in December 2024, is expected to submit his resignation to Macron on Tuesday.

Macron now faces the task of identifying a suitable replacement for Bayrou. The political landscape has been turbulent, with Michel Barnier, Bayrou’s predecessor, being removed just three months after taking over. Before him, Gabriel Atal served as Prime Minister from January to September 2024, stepping down amid political fallout from the July snap elections called by Macron.

Monday’s voting outcome and the continuous turnover in Prime Ministers underscore the persistent political volatility in France.
