Kamala Harris Discusses Potential Running Mate Concerns
On Monday, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow questioned former Vice President Kamala Harris regarding concerns about Pete Buttigieg’s prior position as Transportation Secretary. The apprehension stems from perceptions about his sexuality, which some view as a risk for a 2024 ticket.
Maddow prompted Harris for clarification, noting her historic role as the first woman, and a woman of color, to serve as Vice President. Harris reflected on this journey, highlighting her book, “107 Days,” where she mentioned, “If I were a straight white guy, I would have been an ideal partner.”
In response, Harris attempted to clarify thoughts attributed to Buttigieg, emphasizing that he felt unable to be on the ticket because of his sexual orientation.
Further discussing her thoughts, Harris remarked, “My point was, as I write in the book, I know that in 107 days, we witnessed one of the most enthusiastic elections for a president.” She endorsed Buttigieg as an exemplary civic leader, adding that her history as an ally to the LGBTQ community shaped her perspective.
Alongside her comments, she recognized the high stakes of their short decision-making timeframe. Harris also critiqued former President Trump, labeling him a “tyrant” in this context.
Overall, Harris’s reflections underscore a complex blend of personal and political identities, addressing both the challenges she faced and the dynamics of contemporary American politics.
