Maddie Prutett and her husband, Grant Trout, are facing backlash for their views on spanking as a disciplinary method for their daughter, Hosanna.
During an episode of a podcast, the couple discussed this approach, leading some listeners to feel that Hosanna was being treated more like a playful idea than a child. Critics especially targeted their comments regarding how they perceived discipline through their religious lens.
Trout expressed that their beliefs, which stem from biblical teachings, made the use of corporal punishment seem “jovial” in nature when it came to raising Hosanna.
“The Lord’s discipline is distinct from merely punishing for disobedience,” he argued, suggesting that parental guidance shouldn’t just follow the child’s whims, but instill proper behavior.
“Honestly, I found it funny when we started spanking Hosanna,” he added, claiming this was in line with biblical scripture, which he believes supports such actions.
Prutett echoed her husband’s sentiments with a biblical reference of her own, noting that the scripture suggests the use of discipline. She insisted on the necessity of this kind of guidance, remarking on alternatives like timeouts as less adequate.
The couple’s remarks ignited a wave of anger across their social media platforms, with numerous comments accusing them of promoting an attitude that could be viewed as “self-righteous.” Many expressed concerns regarding the implications of their parenting style.
Comments on YouTube highlighted the inappropriateness of laughing about child discipline. One user remarked, “What you’re describing is not parenting; it’s abuse.” Others pointed out that the biblical context of the “rod” was often misinterpreted and shouldn’t be associated with physical punishment.
One commenter provided context around the historical use of the rod by shepherds, stating it was meant to guide, not to hurt, and cautioned against using scripture as a justification for harmful behavior.
A TikTok content creator also called attention to the couple’s statements, labeling them unsettling, particularly Grant’s apparent enthusiasm regarding spanking. Many TikTok users mirrored these sentiments, questioning the couple’s motives.
After marrying in October 2022, Prutett and Trout welcomed Hosanna in January and have shared their parenting experiences openly, as well as their struggles with personal issues, including past addictions to pornography.
Both have expressed gratitude for their spiritual journeys and the support from their community in overcoming past behavior, emphasizing the importance of faith in their lives.
