Nightcaps: Your Daily Sports, News, and Culture Digest
Here we are, the final Wednesday of October. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the start of this month, which many argue is simply the best month of the year, and now it’s nearly gone.
It’s a bit disheartening, isn’t it? And if you think that’s bad, wait until you see what I came across at Lowe’s yesterday afternoon.
Take a look at this:
Honestly, it’s just a bit much. I get how advertising works, but still, this is pushing it. Lowe’s has officially moved past Halloween. In fact, they’ve already set up a massive tent for Christmas trees out in the parking lot.
That’s right—this Christmas tree tent has been up since last week. It’s a shocking reminder of where we are as a society. Mike Gundy’s famous question about our current state feels more relevant than ever.
But I digress…
Welcome to your Hump Day Nightcaps! Today, we’ve got a lot going on, including Justin Herbert’s girlfriend, Madison Beer, facing some not-so-happy Chargers fans during her performance at Disneyland. The so-called “Happiest Place on Earth”? Not so much today!
What else do I have for you? There’s Nicolas Cage channeling John Madden (and I use that term loosely), some drama with Rays fans, and a shoutout to Aileen Hnatiuk who might have inspired Tampa to snag a Game 5 win last night.
So, grab a pumpkin beer for our last Hump Day of October, and let’s dive into it.
Dolphins Snag First Win of the Season
We have a lot to cover, so let’s get right to it. If someone had told me back in August that both the Colts and Chargers would be the laughingstocks of the league come Halloween, I would’ve thought they were crazy. I would’ve figured my Dolphins would be at the bottom, but surprise, they’ve shown some real promise this season.
Seriously, what a strategic tank job by Miami. Kudos to them.
Yesterday, the Colts began their team overhaul, and I suspect the Chargers won’t be far behind. They just came off a bye week and are slated to face the Rams next. A loss there could spell trouble for coach Mike McDaniel.
Rob Gronkowski Calls Out Chargers’ Failings
To be fair, I’m still a bitter Dolphins fan, yet even I’m shocked by how poorly the Chargers’ offense has performed. For years, we debated “Tua or Herbert?” but at this point, it’s looking like neither really stands out. They’ve both had their struggles.
I happen to have a lot of Herbert on my fantasy team, and let me tell you, it’s disappointing. He’s simply not been good.
Speaking of Herbert, let’s shift to Madison Beer…
Madison Beer’s Rough Disneyland Performance
It must be quite a blow to be Madison Beer, up there performing at Disneyland, while fans are shouting “FIX THE CHARGERS!” Not exactly the magical experience she was hoping for this season.
Madison and Justin were the talk of the town during the offseason, but now she’s left dodging questions meant for the front office. It’s just unfortunate. But hey, chin up, Madison! It really can’t get worse from here, right?
I get how Justin feels; I’d probably be drowning my sorrows too if my team was 0-5. And Miller Lite from an aluminum bottle? Classic move.
Now, let’s move on…
Nicolas Cage and His Madden Impression
Switching gears, Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of John Madden is about to hit Prime Video soon, and let’s just say, I have my doubts. What he did is hardly an impression—it sounds more like Cage just being Cage. He didn’t even try to mimic Madden’s voice. It’s puzzling.
And as for the actor portraying Pat Summerall? Well, he’s getting a pass today, but his performance isn’t winning any awards either.
If I had to guess who that was, I’d confidently say it’s Nicolas Cage. John Madden’s iconic presence seems to be lost here.
For those too young to remember, Madden was truly a phenomenon. Remember those Thanksgivings filled with turducken? Those were the days!
By the way, turducken? Delicious. Preparing it? Not so much. But if you get it right, it’s worth the effort.

Now, time to wrap this Hump Day up. Let’s look at the World Series. Honestly, I was off base in my predictions.
Seeing the ratings for the Rays vs Brewers has been a pleasant surprise. Over 12 million watched Game 1, with nearly 11 million tuning in for Game 2—even with college football stealing some attention.
Game 3 becomes especially intriguing as it pairs against the Cowboys and Eagles. The Cowboys are primetime royalty for a reason.
Despite the challenges, this is a solid win for MLB, though owners might not be so thrilled. The entire argument about small-market teams struggling on and off the field has been challenged this postseason. I fear we might see a lengthy offseason coming up.
Speaking of optics, the game on Monday didn’t paint the best picture indoors at Tropicana Field. It was surprisingly filled with Brewers fans. I can imagine Rays ownership wasn’t too pleased.
But hey, Game 5 is tonight! Time for Rays fans to make some noise. We need to push this season to a Game 6, right?
That’s all for today. Have a great final October Hump Day, everyone!
Oh, and let’s not forget Aileen Hnatiuk, who went viral a while back as a Saints reporter, now cheering on the Rays for their big Game 4 win. Welcome back, Aileen!
See you tomorrow.
